Explainer: Hurricane Categories

Hurricanes are classified into categories based on their wind speeds using the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. This scale helps people understand the potential damage a hurricane can cause. Hereโ€™s a breakdown of the categories and their associated wind speeds:

Hurricane Categories and Wind Speeds

  1. Category 1
    • Wind Speed: 74-95 mph (119-153 km/h)
    • Potential Damage: Very dangerous winds will produce some damage. Minor damage to exterior structures, like shingles or siding, and trees or large branches might fall.
  2. Category 2
    • Wind Speed: 96-110 mph (154-177 km/h)
    • Potential Damage: Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage. Risk of major roof and siding damage, and many trees could be uprooted or snapped, leading to blocked roads.
  3. Category 3 (Major Hurricane)
    • Wind Speed: 111-129 mph (178-208 km/h)
    • Potential Damage: Devastating damage will occur. Well-built framed homes may suffer major damage, and large trees will be uprooted. Electricity and water could be unavailable for several days to weeks.
  4. Category 4 (Major Hurricane)
    • Wind Speed: 130-156 mph (209-251 km/h)
    • Potential Damage: Catastrophic damage will occur. Homes can sustain severe damage, and most trees and power poles could be downed, isolating residential areas for days or weeks.
  5. Category 5 (Major Hurricane)
    • Wind Speed: 157 mph or higher (252 km/h or higher)
    • Potential Damage: Catastrophic damage will occur. High percentages of framed homes will be destroyed, total roof failure and wall collapse are likely. Power outages will last for weeks to possibly months, and most areas will be uninhabitable for a long time.

Why Do These Categories Matter?

The category of a hurricane gives people an idea of how strong and dangerous the storm is. Higher categories mean stronger winds and more potential damage, so understanding these categories helps in making important decisions about evacuations and preparations.

Itโ€™s important to note that even lower-category hurricanes can be very dangerous, especially if they bring heavy rain, storm surges, and flooding. So, always take hurricane warnings seriously, regardless of the category.
